When you enter the term “employee engagement” into Google, you get 22.8 MILLION results. If you’re wondering why employee engagement is such a hot topic, consider this: According to this Fast Company article, high employee engagement is actually critical to a company’s performance and, according to Gallup, it impacts nine key performance outcomes in these ways:

* 37% lower absenteeism
* 25% lower turnover (in high-turnover organizations)
* 65% lower turnover (in low-turnover organizations)
* 28% less shrinkage
* 48% fewer safety incidents
* 41% fewer patient safety incidents
* 41% fewer quality incidents (defects)
* 10% higher customer metrics
* 21% higher productivity
* 22% higher profitability

Many of the articles and studies that came up in our Google search told us that employee engagement is lower than ever. Our friends at the IBM Smarter Workforce Institute decided to see for themselves if this was true. The results of their study were inconsistent with those other reports, to say the least. Contrary to the proclamations of others, 70% of employees at organizations surveyed by IBM around the world (average of 4.5 million employees surveyed each year from 2008 to 2012) were engaged and only 12% of employees were disengaged.
