CMO, Monrovia

Monrovia, the largest grower of premium landscaping plants in the country, is currently seeking a Chief Marketing Officer.

The CMO works collaboratively across the organization to bring innovation to the way we engage with our target audiences, from consumers to landscape professionals to retailers and plant breeders. The CMO is responsible for driving brand awareness, preference, and purchase through channels including independent garden centers, big box retailer, and e-commerce.

Overseeing strategic planning and tactical execution of all brand and marketing efforts, the CMO is responsible for our paid advertising/media mix, website, video and other content assets, in-store promotion, events, email marketing, influencer outreach, PR, social media, brochures and sales materials, and other promotional items. The CMO integrates these tools to communicate brand messages effectively. Success in this role requires leading and coaching teams, strategic vision and execution in alignment with brand, and excellent communication and relationship building. The role reports to the CEO.

The CMO will provide inspiration, leadership, and guidance to this lean Marketing team. Serving as the brand & marketing steward, consumer advocate, and protector of the brand, the CMO is a player coach who collaborates closely with leaders across the organization to bring creative and content strategies to life in ways that resonate with our target audiences and achieve measured results.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

Developing, implementing, and managing the marketing strategy

Defining, developing and organizing the company’s marketing team structure to optimally fit the company’s plan for growth

Developing and managing channel and partner strategies and programs (e-commerce platform, relationships with key retailers)

Crafting marketing communications, including branding, public relations, advertising, tradeshows, seminars and events collateral materials, website design and content

Developing and managing the performance of the company’s entire marketing budget

Developing and managing key communication pieces, with varied audiences

Formulating and tracking key metrics and success criteria for all marketing programs and activities

Evaluating, through research and empirical studies, market opportunities, the success of marketing tactics, and advertising/promotion initiatives

Establishing credibility throughout the organization (including with the Executive Management Team) as an effective leader and developer of solutions that appropriately models the corporate culture

Participating in and contributing to high-level strategy discussions with the Executive Management Team

Ensuring that all deadlines are met in an effective and professional manner

The ideally qualified candidate will bring with them the following qualifications & experience:

Must be a knowledgeable (and ideally passionate) gardener

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing or related work experience equivalent

Minimum of 10 years of successful marketing experience with at least 8-10 years of marketing leadership experience. Prefer garden-related brand experience, or home-oriented retail experience.

Strong creative vision with ability to interpret and evolve brand aesthetic

Demonstrated experience developing and working with big box retailers as well as independent retailers

Demonstrated experience with content marketing strategy and execution

Knowledge of e-commerce space, with knowledge of emerging digital innovations and potential partners

Significant experience and proven success in implementing and evolving marketing strategies

Analytical, planning and decision making skills; demonstrated ability to use marketing data for business decisions

Strategic agility, organizational ability and successful track record for building effective teams

Effective communication, marketing and relationship skills with internal and external customers at all levels
