CMO – Total Wine & More – DC Area

We are looking for an experienced EVP, Chief Marketing Officer that will develop and execute the customer strategies to grow the company from $2- $4B in sales. As the top marketer, you will work with the Senior Leadership Team to lead the organization through a major transformation as we move to a “consumer insight’s “driven decision making organization. The ideal candidate will have been the top marketing executive for a $4-10B retailer that operates both brick and mortar stores and has a strong online presence and enjoys driving all multi- channel efforts. It is a great opportunity for someone that has a progressive approach to using data to drive customer acquisition, retention, and frequency but equally enjoys driving a more traditional marketing calendar for a high growth company. The role will lead the teams that have responsibility for Customer Insights and Analytics, Segmentation and Campaigns, Loyalty and CRM, Offer Development/Promotions, Production, Creative and Marketing Finance. It is a unique opportunity for the right person to be able to use their strong Marketing foundation and apply it to a business that operates very differently due to the legislative landscape and the three tier system. The EVP is required to build high performing leadership teams that are capable of multiple career progressions to support the business transformation and the organization’s long term growth strategy. The position will be located in Bethesda, Maryland at Total Wine & More’s corporate headquarters reporting to the CEO and interacting with the Board on a regular basis.

Collaborates with the Senior Leadership team and the board to develop and execute all customer strategies

Develops, articulates and executes a 1,3 and 5 year marketing plan utilizing industry best practices and past TWM successes

Develops, measures and reports on key success metrics for the company and the marketing team

Ensures customers receive a consistent brand message across all omni-channel efforts

Coordinates the use of external and internal consumer data for the organization; directs the company’s market research efforts

Develops marketing plans that drive higher frequency of visits for existing customers and creates new customers both in brick and mortar stores and on-line

Communicates to all parts of the organization the attributes of the target customers and what motivates the target segments buying behaviors

Identifies and drives innovative solutions to achieve greater operational efficiency and productivity for the function

Collaborates with the Digital team and the Merchandising team to ensure company objectives are met


Builds strong organizational capability by setting the standard for talent assessment, attraction and retention

Creates high performing teams that work well cross functionally

Build top-flight team by providing the personal leadership, creative environment, training and strategic support necessary to attract and develop top talent

Build out a highly effective team of internal and external resources, spanning across all major marketing disciplines


Has been the top marketing executive for a $3-7B retailer with a brick and mortar and on-line presence.

In the role of CMO has been accountable for multi-channel marketing efforts to include in store, on-line, direct mail, print, radio and TV

15 years minimum experience in marketing and management with 5+ years in a senior retail management position,

Prior executive team experience required, with several retailers is preferable

Involvement in a high growth business at one point during career,

Experience with a high touch customer business a plus

Has built strong Consumer Insights & Analytics, Segmentation, Digital and Loyalty & CRM functions


Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business or related field

Master’s degree preferred

Ongoing leadership training participation


Willingness to learn TW& M business model at the detail level and to quickly gain an understanding of the nuances of the alcohol industry

Proven ability to stay current on marketing and retail best practices

Strong analytical orientation and experience in using data to drive customer acquisition, retention, frequency, etc.

Ability to transform an organization to a more data driven decision making company

Solid understanding of market research and data analysis methods

Experience applying marketing techniques over digital and non-digital channels

Demonstrated success in developing and executing a strategy to combat competition

Possess strong communication, presentation and consensus building skills

Proven ability to work through conflict, build trust, and influence outcomes through outstanding interpersonal skills at all levels

Proven track record of implementing innovative ideas while leading the team through change management

Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and staff to create a results-driven, team oriented environment

Strong interpersonal and people development skills with proven success in motivating, mentoring and creating an environment where people are promoted and the best talent wants to be

Proven track record of improving Team Member engagement scores

Demonstrated ability to coordinate process improvements and productivity enhancements with the IT team
