This June, for CMO Club Cares Month, we are showcasing CMOs who use their time and talent to make a positive impact and highlight charities that have benefited from CMO expertise through participation in the CMO Club Cares program. This time around, we highlight CMO Club member Camila Casale, Chief Marketing Officer at Claro Enterprise Solutions, for her work with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. For more than half a century, St. Jude has been a leader in identifying, developing, and providing innovative treatments for childhood cancer.

CMO Club — Welcome. How did you get involved with St. Jude’s?

Camila Casale — I wanted to do something for these kids, so I reached out to them. It’s been four years now that I’ve been involved in various roles, on the executive committee and co-chairing the Miami Gala. This year I was selected as the very first Chairwoman here in Miami. We raised over $800,000 this May’s gala.

CMO Club — Why St. Jude’s?

Camila Casale — Kids, in general, have always touched my heart. My father owned a hospital in Argentina, and my husband is a physician here in Miami. When I visit my husband at work, all those kids who are struggling with just being sick, it breaks my heart. The fact that they have to go through this terrible disease is not fair. It’s incredible what St. Jude’s does for those kids. I visited the Hospital in Memphis recently. Honestly, everyone should go there at least once. It’s hard to describe with words what it’s like being there, two or three-month-old babies going through chemo, families struggling with this terrible disease. You’re left asking yourself, “why them? What did they do to deserve this?” St. Jude is committed to all children. No child is ever denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay. They share all the research globally so others can benefit. So much more. They are amazing.

CMO Club –  You’ve raised $800K for them at the last gala, been on the executive committee, visited the hospital. Have you had personal contact with any of the kids?

Camila Casale — When I visited the hospital, I was able to spend time with some of the kids there, but not only the patients. I spent a lot of time with the families as well. I’ve become pretty close to a few of them. We are still in contact. I feel like those relationships will be with me forever.

CMO Club — Is there one particular kid that sticks with you?

Camila Casale — There is. During last year’s gala, I met this incredible seven-year-old, Victoria. Victoria had brain cancer. She’d undergone four brain surgeries and was in remission, cancer free right now. Last year at the gala I wore a long, sparkly red dress. The very first time I met her, she comes up to me and says, “Thank you, Camila, for everything you do for kids like me.” Then she says, “One day when I am older I want to wear your dress.” I’ll never forget that moment. We Facetime a lot now. She wants to someday be a doctor and help others so they don’t go through what she had to.

CMO Club — What has your involvement with St. Jude meant to you?

Camila Casale — It means pretty much everything. I would love to do this full-time. Hopefully, one day I will. It’s amazing how we can have such a huge impact on people’s lives. When you see everyone working together, the energy is incredible, and you can’t help but feel anything is possible.

CMO Club — Has the CMO Club helped?

Camila Casale — I’ve been reaching out to other CMO Club members who have supported me the whole time, Liliana Torres from ABB, Muriel Lotto from Western Union, all these Miami-based CMOs. We’ve been working together to support and encourage this incredible cause. I think it’s pretty cool.
