1. What was your first (or favorite) job youÛªve had?
My first job was at age 16 ÛÒ serving yogurt at Penguins, followed by quite a bit of construction work doing roofing and carpentry. However, my favorite job is definitely the one I currently hold, as Chief Brand Steward for MusicÛªs Biggest Brand ÛÒ the GRAMMY.
2. What are the three most important components for your personal and professional success?
- Being nimble and agile
- Being willing to make mistakes
- Seeing oneself as an agent of change, driving the brand and the company forward
- Respecting the people on your team, allowing them the freedom to achieve great things.
3. Name an “inflection point” experience that prepared you for your current position as a CMO.
There was a formative moment in high school when I took a class called Û÷Propaganda & the Mass MediaÛª that completely changed the way I looked at the marketplace and crystallized what I wanted to do as a career. It was all about shifting public perception (whether it was the old propaganda war films run in theaters or modern advertising). It inspired and fascinated me.
4. What characteristics do you value most when hiring new marketing talent for your team?
Beyond skills and work experience, I am drawn to people with ambition, drive and a hunger to continually improve.
5. What technology are you looking forward to using or implementing for your brand in 2016?
Better ways to harness data/analytics to ensure more effective marketing communication.
6. Which book would you recommend to your fellow Heads of Marketing right now?
I am currently reading – The CMOÛªs Periodic Table: A Renegade’s Guide To MarketingåÊ

Richard Marnell ÛÒ The work he and his team are doing has re-defined Viking River Cruises and really made them top-of-mind for a far bigger audience.
