Three Top CMOs Share What They Consider the Most Important Leadership Qualities

“What do you think is the most important leadership quality?”

Muriel Lotto, Head of Global Brand & Marketing, Western Union
@MurielLotto

I articulate leadership around 3 qualities: 1. Clarity of expectations – as a leader, it is our job to be clear on what we expect from our teams and with that to inspire them and motivate them. 2. Frank and open dialogue around how those expectations are being met or not – the frank and open part is the key, no surprises, no bullshit, listening and checking in very often, problem solving together, supporting but also challenging each other is how we raise the bar and lastly 3. Consequences – both on the upside and the downside, be clear about what are the rewards but also what action will be taken if a team member does not meet expectations. We often under-estimate and underplay this part.

The Marine Corps defines 11 Leadership Principles and 14 Leadership Traits (you can look them up online).  For me, the most important of those are Integrity and Courage.  Taken together, this means “doing the right thing, all the time.”  Many people believe that, “sometimes it’s hard to do the right thing,” but in my experience, “It’s easier to ALWAYS do the right thing.”  If you operate under this philosophy, then you don’t hesitate to tell the truth tactfully, to raise thorny issues, or to call out questionable activity even with unknown consequences.  Additionally, when we operate with grace and humility it helps us to accomplish whatever mission we have at hand with expediency and effectiveness.
